Astrology 19th-25th: The Sun at Midnight

     This year the black sun of an eclipse rises a day before the equinox, denoting the sun's moment of balance with a strange bookmark.

     The Sun's set of symbols is well known.  The Sun is sovereignty, centrality, balance, power, command, creativity.  It represents and stimulates the center of self as well as its outward expression.  It is both personality and ego- the solid light of the nuclear reaction and the kingdom which it irradiates with its sovereign glow.

      But what of the dark sun?  The sun of the eclipse, the sun at midnight, the invisible sun.  In several cultures, the Sun drove across the vault of the sky every day, and descended beneath the horizon to an invisible underworld.  A land of the dead.  The eclipse, however, brings the darkness of the sun at midnight into the  midst of the day.  

The Head and Tale of the Dragon 

     As the earth's shadow shrouds the sun, eclipses are veiled in fearful myth.  This mask of black silk is painted like an executioner's hood, with images of death and terror adorning it.  People for whom light was the supreme symbol of good fled the strange antilight of the eclipses, assigning it to the realm of demonic forces.
    In the astral mythology of both the India and the west, eclipses occurred when the Sun and Moon encountered the Head and Tail of the Dragon, Rahu and Ketu, Caput and Cauda Draconis, or the North and South Lunar Nodes.  In Indian mythology, Rahu and Ketu were 2 parts of a demonic being that had been cut in half after swallowing the Sun and Moon.  Though cut in half, this creature was immortal, and therefore each member of the pair continued to lie in wait for the Sun and Moon, ready to ambush them every 6 months or so and cause an eclipse.

   On Monday, the 19th, the Sun and Moon are ambushed by the North Node, Rahu, once again, and a partial solar eclipse is the result.  Russia, India, China and Alaska are privy to the spectacle of the invisible Sun during the day. 

      This rare gate opens the way to the world of the Sun at midnight- the invisible sovereign, the king in exile, the man in the iron mask.  Forgotten aspects of ourselves have a chance to return from exile during this opening of the gate.  We begin a 6 month anti-heroic odyssey of returning the exiled aspects of ourselves to their rightful throne in the kingdom of our lives.

    This bodes poorly for established leaders and organizational schemes, and well for those who would usurp them.  It  denotes the rise of dark horses and the  fall of old lions. 

     On a personal level, it indicates a part of the life arising from the morass of emotional confusion of the last several weeks.  The black pearl of wisdom gleaned from immersion in murky seas sprouts a corona of flame which promises to bring new light.

Aries:  The Ram 

      The anti-hero/ine arises in your dreams, to liberate you from the psychological prison that half your light has been confined to.  Follow your fantasies, as your dreams of victory hold the key to the changes you need to enact in waking life.  It's up to you to translate your fantasies into action without being ridiculous.  Though if it is your birthday, I suppose you can be ridiculous.  Just this once.

 
Taurus:  The Bull

      Taurus, the area in which dark salvation arises is in your dreams of independence.  But independence is not the whole issue.  Old Jove has been making you excellent offers from the house of financial entanglement.  Freedom will be, ironically, achieved by mingling others resourcesand your own. 

Gemini:  The Twins

    Stifled creativity in the workplace has piled up inside, giving birth to an ambition that shadows your day job. This equinox sees your night-time ambitions breaking into your dayside reality.  The changes in your personal life must find their companion in your career or you will remain unsatisfied.  The equinoctal sun rises on your mutated ambition.

 
Cancer:  The Crab

     The dark sun opens a small portal to distant vistas.   It is as if there is something hiding at the end of journey, some piece of wisdom, some perspective that will grant your life a missing unity.  The journey is one towards a more intentional life, and the lesson is in the movement towards the goal.

 
Leo:  The Lion

     The dark sun sheds its radiance on nearly invisible rituals of self creation and destruction.  Recognize limiting patterns of energy exchange with the people and world around you and trade them in for more efficient ones.  It will bring you closer to living up to the ideal self-image you've been working to deserve. 

 
Virgo:  The Virgin

      Newfound abundance in your emotional and financial foundations comes as you leave worn out habits behind and engage with new people.  Your dark sun rises in the realm of the social.

 
Libra:  The Scales 

    A newfound confidence in the realm of material affairs, a courage to take business by the horns.  An enthusiasm to take better care of yourself.  A desire to rise out of the soup of depression and stop spending your time and money in the wrong places. 

 
Scorpio:   The Scorpion

     Action in the realm of lifestyle is still key.  The equinox offers you an image of a new person you'd like to be.  A more social, creative person.  The black skies are asking Scorpio to come out of its hole and dance the dance of death for all of us.  And if you can't dance it, sing it.  If not sing it, paint it.  The dark star rising on your horizon is a creative one.

 
Sagittarius:  The Archer

    During this year of good fortune, Sagittarius will also see a deepening understanding of its interconnections to other people.  Explosions, expulsions and alienation on the homefront are the teaching device.

 
Capricorn:  The Goat

     For Capricorn, the eclipse stimulates a multi-faceted schedule.  Friends, family, work and play all crowd in.  An awareness of how to season your life with variety is blooming.  Also coming up from the ground is an appreciation for neglected talents.

 
Aquarius:  The Water Bearer

     The last month has scraped away a layer of illusions, and presents you with a clearer vision of how to turn your ideas into wealth.  As your creative mind fights its way into the financial sector, you'll find a practicality you'd only suspected.   

 
Pisces:  The Fish

       Whether you can see it or not, the shadow of the eclipse falls right in you lap, Pisces.  Your experiments with your identity have been answered from the other side.  As you reach towards the future, it stretches out to meet you half way.  You'll be rubbing elbows with reality in a way you haven't for a while.
