Ginseng:
Panax quinquefolius L. (American Ginseng):
Shown to increase mental efficiency and energy. Considered to be “adapatogenic”- meaning it can be used to return the body to a normal state. This indicates it can be used to help the body to adapt to high or low temperatures and stress when taken over an extended period. It may prevent or inhibit cancerous tumor development. Has been shown to enhance the effects of breast cancer medication. Stimulates appetite, treats headaches, constipation, cystitis, rheumatism, lumbago, sciatica, menopause symptoms, coughs, bronchitis and colds.

Panax schin-seng L. (Asiatic Ginseng):
This variety has multiple uses including enhancing mental and physical energy (stimulant), fighting inflammations, increasing sex drive, normalizing bodily systems and relieving stress. Can be used to increase levels of ‘good’ cholesterol (high density lipoprotein cholesterol) and decrease levels of ‘bad’ cholesterol (low density lipoprotein cholesterol). Can also be used for enhancing appetite and normalizing digestion problems; can ease childbirth and normalize menstruation for women. Also is helpful for impotence, rheumatism, blood disorders, hemorrhage, fevers, coughs and colds as a demulcent. Helps to strengthen endocrine glands. Although it has not been proven, Asian ginseng may decrease endothelial cell dysfunction- which explains its reputation for treating blood disorders. When these cells are considered ‘dysfunctional’ they can cause circulation blockage in various ways- sometimes leading to heart attack or stroke. Thus, some consider ginseng to offer a certain protection against cardiovascular problems. Also increases production, activity and performance of sperm. One study indicated that ginseng enhances immune system performance in subjects after they were given the flu shot. Ginseng may be toxic in large quantities, however.

Panax trifolius L.: Roots were chewed by Native Americans for headaches, loss of consciousness and pulmonary constriction. The stems and leaves were used by Native Americans as a tea to treat indigestion, colic, hepatitis, tuberculosis, rheumatism, gout and hives. Stimulate male sex glands (treats impotence), strengthen adrenal glands, eases cocaine withdrawal, enhances energy, treats colds and promote pulmonary functioning. Can normalize blood pressure, stimulate the appetite and enhance immune system. May protect from radiation.

Eleutherococcus senticosus L. (Siberian ginseng): Used to relieve stress, treat headaches, normalize blood pressure, improve circulation and harden the arteries. Can help the symptoms of angina (temporary chest pain or sensation of pressure that occurs while the heart muscle is not receiving enough oxygen). Also is used to treat headaches, insomnia, bronchitis and other chronic lung problems, fatigue- mental and physical and improves overall bodily functioning.

Also stimulates the central nervous system. Can be used to treat colds, flu, sinusitis, bronchitis and hay fever, food allergies and earache. Good for improving functioning of the heart, lymphatic and respiratory system, as well as the spleen, stomach, pancreas, prostate, colon and stimulates the nervous system. Also can treat syphilis, gonorrhea, jaundice, hepatitis, bladder inflammation and glandular swelling.
Snort it for nasal congestion or for all catarrhal conditions (inflammation of a mucous membrane accompanied by excessive secretions)
Washes: EYES: boric acid + goldenseal makes a gentle eyewash; MOUTH: can be used as an antiseptic mouthwash, used as a tea infusion-applied to a toothbrush-for sore gums or pyorrhea (chronic disease of the teeth characterized by the formation of pus in the pockets between the roots of the teeth and their surrounding tissues, and often accompanied by the loosening and loss of the teeth); SKIN: external washes can be used for skin diseases, sores, erysipelas (an acute, infectious disease caused by a specific streptococcus [a kind of bacteria], and characterized by fever and diffusely spreading deep-red inflammation of the skin or mucous membranes). Can be used to treat eczema, impetigo, piles
