Archetypes as Related to Chakras and Astrology, and Why They Are Useful

Archetypes are mythological characters that have manifested themselves in reality within people- in a pattern that repeats continually throughout history. Archetypes are simply energy patterns that we develop as a result of learning from our own astrological natures, learning from other people with similar energy patterns or they are developed as a result of specific energetic patterns of functioning or not functioning. Most archetypes are neutral or positive in their effects, but some archetypes are unhealthy for the human energy field.

My Archetypal Wheel (a tool developed by Caroline Myss)

archetypesWhy Archetypes are Useful Tools
Archetypes have been considered legitimate healing tools since Psychoanalyst Carl Jung wrote his book Archetypes of the Collective Unconscious. The theory behind this is that archetypes tap into unconscious templates of behavior that we have learned, and when applying them to ourselves, we tap into our own unconscious behaviors- and why we behave in certain ways. There are an infinite number of archetypes as they often identified and occasionally created. Archetypes are intimately intertwined with the chakras. Archetypes are not permanent, and many people have more than one archetype with which they pattern their energy on. Not all problems with the energy field can be described are archetypal, but some of the common and most useful archetypes are described below, and how they relate to the chakras:

The First Chakra- The first chakra is related to the Mother/Father Archetype and the Victim Archetype
The Mother/Father Archetype   This archetype is correlated with the healthy functioning of the first chakra. The energy of this archetype is that of a caring parent. Normally it is called the Mother Archetype, though I think now that roles have largely switched in terms of male and female parenting, it may be more accurate to call it the Mother/Father Archetype. This chakras’ energy is full of beautiful love and meticulous caring for another- often a child or older parent. It is connected to the energy of the functioning fourth chakra and this is why the two chakras are  related (see chakras) This archetype represents the opposite of the victim, who cannot care for his  or herself and therefore cannot care for others.
The Victim Archetype     This archetype is correlated with the damaged or closed first chakra. The victim archetype is assumed by the individual when he/she fails to take responsibility for his/her self. When the first chakra leaks energy, or is entangled via cords with other peoples’ chakras, it is often related to one’s inability to take responsibility and therefore take care of oneself. If the victim cannot care for herself, she cannot care for others. This dysfunctional energetic pattern is one of the most damaging patterns identified by healers. The consequences of this archetype are serious, often develop quickly and often manifest- eventually- in physical illness. The mental, social, psychological and spiritual aspects health are all affected by this archetype. This archetype may be part the reason that the first chakra must function well in order for the other chakras to function well (see chakras).

The Second Chakra The second chakra is related to the Martyr (or Savior) vs. the Emperor (or Empress).

The Emperor of Empress Archetype: This archetype is correlated to the healthy functioning of the second chakra.
This archetype represents the person who contributes both to the world and to him or herself. I often think of the Empress archetype as the beautiful, productive career woman who also takes the time for herself and enjoys all the beauty and luxuries life has to offer. This archetype is useful in understanding the energy of the second chakra because the Emperor or Empress is vital enough, emotionally healthy enough and is balanced in his/her feelings enough to enable him/her to give generously to the world and give generously back to his/her self as well without feeling guilty.

The Martyr or Savior Archetype This archetype is correlated with the unhealthy functioning of the second chakra. This archetype takes full responsibility for his or herself, and often takes on the responsibilities of others as well. However, the Martyr or Savior does not have the inner vitality/security to take time or give energy back to his/herself. This archetype is also called the Savior Archetype because it is related to the “savior complex” often found in the career world of healing and health care. Often those who care most about society in general do not know how to care for themselves as well. The result is that they run ragged- and become the Martyr or Savior. This is directly related to low or dysfunctional energy in the second chakra. The second chakra relates to giving ourselves the credit and energy we deserve, and we do not do that, this chakra can leak energy and cause imbalance to the rest of the chakras.
            `
The Third Chakra The third chakra is related to the Warrior Archetype and the Servant Archetype.

The Warrior Archetype This chakra is correlated to the healthy functioning of the third chakra. It depicts the Warrior who goes bravely into the world to fight, but rather than physically fighting (as opposed to the first chakra), the warrior fights with the knowledge of the nature of power and how issues of power play roles in our lives. The Warrior of today is often career-motivated and driven my an internal sense of his/her personal power, drive and motivation.  The Warrior is often successful. This archetype describes the energy of the third chakra – in that the third chakra is our solar plexus (another name for this chakra)-our center of personal power- and healthy functioning of this chakra can bring forth a wellspring of energy, power, motivation and victory.

The Servant Archetype
The Servant Archetype is correlated to the unhealthy functioning of the third chakra. The Servant Archetype describes the diligent and dedicated worker who works focuses closely on details and works quite thoroughly and serves others well and to their satisfaction, but is unable to be recognized by his/her peers for his/her efforts. A servant who is happy to serve is one form of energy, but a servant who feels hidden resentment at a lack of recognition is another. This describes the loss or misdirection of energy in the third chakra when it does not flow properly. This is because the servant  is giving his/her power out, but not taking any in. The servant must learn to turn around this flow of energy, become the warrior or similar archetype and thereby heal this chakra.

The Fourth Chakra- The fourth chakra is related to the Actor archetype and the Lover Archetype.

The Lover Archetype- The Lover Archetype is correlated to the healthy functioning of the fourth chakra. The lover is a person who not only participates fully in life, but does so with love. The lover's heart is open and enjoys all kinds of relationships: romantic, friendships, family, work-related, community-related, and global relationships. The lover knows how to enjoy the company of others and tries concsciously to spread his/her energy around, but must try to avoid mixing energy too much. The lover is typically full of light and positive energy.

The Actor Archetype- The Actor Archetype is correlated to the unhealthy functioning of the fourth chakra. The actor archetype is characterized by a person who enjoys the benefits of love, but does not understand the nature of love and therefore works to pretend to love, but cannot truly love. This person is immersed in inner battle- trying to connect, but fearful of losing personal power. This can be related to cords blocking the fourth chakra, impairing its functioning, or the chakra may be blocked or closed.

The Fifth Chakra- The fifth chakra is related to the Silent Child Archetype and the Communicator (Messenger) Archetype

The Communicator or Messenger Archetype- The Communicator or Messenger Archetype is correlated to the healthy functioning of the fifth chakra. The communicator is the person who can communicate easily and enjoys comminication of all kinds in general The communicator has a light and well-flowing fifth chakra and enjoys the art and experience of talking, writing, lecturing, artistic expression and meaningful and truthful communication of any other kind. There is a strong connection to the will energy in the fifth chakra- The fifth chakra does not flow properly if the person's energy is out of control as communication skills are related to control. This is important because the development of a strong and pure will is important for energy to flow to the sixth chakra where it is a necessity.

The Silent Child Archetype- The Silent Child Archetype is correlated to the unhealthy functioning of the fifth chakra. The archetypal silent child is the child who fails to communicate because he is unable to control his energy and activate his fifth chakra-despite having attained the level of person power that naturally comes with the activation and functioning of the third chakra. The silent child is powerful on the inside, but uncommuncative- which nullifies his power. There is a sense of frustration that goes with this archetype as the person is attuned to high vibrations, but is unable to express himself and feels held back in terms of relationships and goals-spiritual and otherwise, depending on how damaged the chakra is.

The Sixth Chakra- The sixth chakra is related to the Intellectual Archetype and the Intuitive Archetype.

The Intellectual- The Intellectual Archetype is correlated to the unhealthy functioning of the sixth chakra. The intellectual archetype describes the person who understand concepts and enjoys studying them, but cannot activate them to enrichen her life due to a lack of spiritual guidance in the life. First, a healthy connection to the divine world is cultivated, then come the concepts, and with intuition the concepts become charged with energy- with travels through the brain and out the sixth chakra. If the sixth chakra is distorted or blocked because concepts are learned but not activated, the intellectual archetype is born.

The Intuitive- The Intuitive Archetype is correlated to the healthy functioning of the sixth chakra. The Intuitive Archetype describes the person who has learned their own healing concepts and activated them with intuition. With intuition guiding the process of intellectual discovery of the world, the sixth chakra becomes charged and flows quickly. The more quickly the sixth chakra flows the higher the vibration of the person's energy. The sixth chakra works with both the conscious and subconscious mind, and is rooted in the pineal gland within the center of the brain.astralperson

The Seventh Chakra- The seventh chakra is related to the Egotist Archetype and the Guru Archetype.
The Egotist- The Egotist Archetype is correlated with the unhealthy functioning of the seventh chakra. The Egotist archetype is adopted when the person has learned the concepts and how the activate them with intuition, but has not given their will over to their higher self. When energy comes through the seventh chakra- directly from our higher power- if the seventh chakra is distorted it will flow through the opening and empower the person, but the person uses it for selfish purposes. This is related to the ego challenges that accompany spiritual empowerment, as the person must lower ego drives while gaining power in order to function appropriately in reality.

This is where being grounded is important and the healthy functioning of the first chakra plays a major role here- as do, subsequently, all the other chakras. When healing, the issue goes through each chakra, one at a time, and the person feels the effect of the issue in each chakra - first practically, then emotionally, then mentally, then within their heart, then it effects communication, then it effects intellect- finally it effects the relationship with the higher power. When healing, this process must be done and chakras cleared, one by one, as many times as it takes to clear the issue (energy)entirely. This requires divine energy and the amount of it required depends on how severe the illness is. When the energy is cleared entirely, the part of the body that is most effected by that energy will heal- regardless of how severe the illness may be.

The Guru- The Guru Archetype is correlated to the healthy functioning of the seventh chakra. The Guru Archetype describes person who is fully charged. This person has learned how to activate both divine and personal power, has learned to heal themselves and others and is fully aligned with the will of their higher power. This person can raise or lower his/her vibrations at will, and works with spirit guides to help others.
